چکیده

We explore the effect of pressure on the electronic properties of the ferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard insulator YTiO3. We show that the pressure-induced insulator-metal transition is accompanied by anisotropic structural changes driven by the competition between strongly orbital dependent one-electron hopping and strong, multiorbital electronic correlations in the real crystal structure of YTiO3. Our results are relevant for the general understanding of the intricate and interdependent changes in the orbital and magnetic structure of correlated ferromagnetic insulators showing Mott transitions.

Quantum behavior of orbitals in ferromagnetic titanates: novel orderings and excitations.

We investigate the collective behavior of orbital angular momentum in the spin ferromagnetic state of a Mott insulator with t(2g) orbital degeneracy. The frustrated nature of the interactions leads to an infinite degeneracy of classical states. Quantum effects select four distinct orbital orderings. Two of them have a quadrupolar order, while the other states show in addition weak orbital magne...

Mott transition and suppression of orbital fluctuations in orthorhombic 3d1 perovskites.

Using t(2g) Wannier functions, a low-energy Hamiltonian is derived for orthorhombic 3d(1) transition-metal oxides. Electronic correlations are treated with a new implementation of dynamical mean-field theory for noncubic systems. Good agreement with photoemission data is obtained. The interplay of correlation effects and cation covalency (GdFeO3-type distortions) is found to suppress orbital fl...

Theory of orbital state and spin interactions in ferromagnetic titanates

A spin-orbital superexchange Hamiltonian in a Mott insulator with t2g orbital degeneracy is investigated. More specifically, we focus on a spin ferromagnetic state of the model and study a collective behavior of orbital angular momentum. Orbital order in the model occurs in a nontrivial way—it is stabilized exclusively by quantum effects through the order-from-disorder mechanism. Several energe...

Strain-controlled Insulator-Metal Transition in YTiO3/SrTiO3 Superlattices: A First-Principles Study

The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of (STO)4/(YTO)2 superlattice consisting of Mott insulator YTiO3 (YTO) and band insulator SrTiO3 (STO) under strain are investigated by the density-functional-theory plus U method. It is found that an insulator-metal transition occurs when a compressive strain of 0.2% is applied. The structural analyses reveal that the presence of metallic sta...

Orbital-selective Mott transitions in the 2-band Jz-model: a high-precision quantum Monte Carlo study

Using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within the framework of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), we show that the anisotropic degenerate two-orbital Hubbard model contains two consecutive orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) even in the absence of spin-flip terms and pairhopping processes. In order to reveal the second transition we carefully analyze the low-frequenc...
